The American Writers Museum (“AWM” or “we”) is committed to keeping the information you share with us private and secure. This privacy policy applies to information our constituents and donors provide to the AWM via our website, U.S. mail, email, by phone, or in person. 

The AWM will not disclose or share any personal information you provide with any other party without your permission except for the following: (a) if requested to do so in accordance with a court order, subpoena, or similar legal order and (b) name and mailing address information may be exchanged by the AWM with other cultural institutions, but we do not exchange email addresses or phone numbers. You may opt-out of sharing of your mailing address with other cultural institutions by contacting Linda Dunlavy, Director of Development at dunlavy@americanwritersmuseum.org.

What information do we collect?
The Museum treats the personal information of its users with great consideration. We collect personal information from you when you register on our site, subscribe to our newsletter, respond to a survey, fill out a form, or make a donation.

When using certain areas of our site, you may be asked to enter your name, email address, mailing address, and/or phone number. You may, however, visit our site anonymously.

What do we use your information for?
The information we collect from you may be used in the following ways:

  • To personalize your experience; your information helps us to better respond to your individual needs;
  • To improve our website; we continually strive to improve our website offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from you;
  • To improve customer service; your information helps us more effectively respond to your customer service requests and support needs;
  • To process transactions;
  • To administer contests, promotions, surveys, or other site features;
  • To send periodic promotions, membership renewal notices, and donor communications via the U.S. Postal Service; and
  • To send periodic emails using Mailchimp

The AWM uses Mailchimp to send AWM-generated information and program announcements to our constituents (Mailchimp Privacy Policy). Email receipts, digital tickets, and emailed membership renewal notices are generated and sent via the AWM’s constituent database software from Blackbaud Inc. Invitations to certain events are sent through Paperless Post. This Privacy Policy applies to all information, including email addresses, securely stored in the Blackbaud, Mailchimp, and Paperless Post databases. All AWM emails include the option to unsubscribe. You may also request to have your email omitted from our Mailchimp list at the time you subscribe or become a member or donor.

How do we protect your information?
We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety and confidentiality of all personal information in our custody and control, including restricting access to personal information only to employees and authorized service providers who require such information for the purposes described in this document. Although we take reasonable measures to safeguard the personal information in our custody and control, we need you to understand that we are unable to guarantee that your personal information will never be disclosed or accessed in a manner that is inconsistent with this policy.

We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards in an effort to protect against unauthorized access, use, modification and disclosure of personal information in our custody and control. To provide you with an increased level of security, access to your personal information on certain areas of our site may be protected with a password that you select. We strongly recommend that you do not disclose your password to anyone. We will never ask you for your password in any unsolicited communication.

To ensure the security of credit card information, the AWM website and credit card processing vendor employs industry-standard security methods, including the Secure Socket Layers (SSL) protocol for the encryption of transmitted data.

Use of Data and Cookies
When you visit the AWM website, our servers automatically collect information about the IP address from which you access the site (an IP address is the number that is automatically assigned to your computer whenever you are surfing the Web), the pages you visit, the date and time you access our site, and the type of browser and operating system that you are using. We use this information to better understand how our site is used. We do not track or record personal information about individuals and their visits.

Occasionally, at our discretion, we may include or offer third party products or services on our website. The inclusion of any link on our site does not imply our endorsement of any other company, its websites, or its products and/or services. These linked websites may have separate and independent privacy policies, which we recommend that you carefully read. We have no control over such websites and therefore accept no responsibility or liability for the manner in which the organizations that operate such linked websites may collect, use, disclose or otherwise treat your personal information. Nonetheless, we seek to protect the integrity of our site and welcome any feedback about these sites.

No Children under 13
We have no intention of collecting personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13. When we become aware that personally identifiable information from a child under 13 has been collected without such child’s parent or guardian’s consent, we will use all reasonable efforts to delete such information from our database.

United States
Our service is maintained from within the United States of America. If you are located outside of the United States, by using the service, you authorize the export of personally identifiable information to the United States and its storage and use as specified in this privacy policy.
