Get Lit: Public Domain Party

Start the new year off right with a literary soirée like no other! Join the American Writers Museum as we raise our glasses to welcome an exciting array of new works entering the public domain in 2024. Get ready to rediscover, reimagine, and revel in the riches of the public domain at this month’s Get Lit!

• Join us for the Opening Ceremony as we symbolically unlock the works and release them into the public domain.
• Next, tune into and participate in the Public Domain Read-A-Thon. Select a previously copyrighted work and read it LIVE on our social media.
• Create your masterpiece at our Remix Stations and engage in hands-on activities that celebrate the spirit of collaboration and creativity.
• Help us commemorate this historic event by contributing to a special Public Domain Time Capsule filled with personal reflections, literary mementos, and predictions for the literary landscape of the future, locked away until January 2025.
• Get a public domain-inspired poem from our event partners Poems While You Wait!
• Enjoy beer, wine, and the night’s specialty cockail, the Steamboat Sunrise, a new take on a classic tequila cocktail. Non-alcoholic options available as well.

Get Lit is your way to enjoy evenings in the Loop. Meet friends and fellow book nerds for an early evening treat. Each month, the AWM serves drinks, games, special experiences, and fun activities to get you lit!

Buy your tickets today! A limited number of tickets are available at the door. AWM members, use the access code emailed to you to reveal the member ticket price. Tickets include admission to the museum and drink tickets for two complimentary beverages. Additional drink tickets are available for purchase. Guests must be 21+ to attend Get Lit and show a valid ID at the door.

Poems While You Wait is a simple and fun concept: we (published poets and professors / teachers) bring our vintage portable typewriters to a public place. Then, for a small suggested donation (all of which benefits the 501(c)3 literary nonprofit Rose Metal Press) we type out an original poem for our customers and readers. The topic of the poem is entirely up to the customer, and we have done events for children, adults, and families. The customers not only walk away with an artifact and souvenir of their experience but also with a possible gift and a memorable and unpretentious interaction with poetry.
