A Royal typewriter on the Story of the Day table

AWM Story of the Week

Every week, the AWM is excited to bring you stories written by our visitors in our Story of the Day exhibit. Check back weekly for new stories, and visit the Museum to try out our typewriters and possibly be featured here!

Thanks Lula! We’d love to see more of your poetry!

You will see her as all the grey zones
She is everything you’ve been a bit too afraid to ask about
and everything you weren’t even totally sure existed
She is the one that grew up the fastest in your hometown
always pushing the limits a little too far

on some early mornings
you collected your courage
and decided to venture into some of those grey zones
if you were lucky
she would confess her blurred secrets but only after yours
a
secret
for a
secret
listen to her fumbled confessions
while you tell your blurred truths

i.e. (she hasn’t spoken correctly to her mother in 6 years)
Do not settle for this land of dirt and pain, she speaks,
blood relations mean nothing
then she leaves and
you wonder about the could have been

Welcome to Chicago! We’re glad you and your girlfriend liked the Museum, and can’t wait to see you again.

Hello my name is H— and I just moved to Chicago. Today is my first time in this museum and I LOVE it. My girlfriend is sitting across from me and she types funny. She holds her fingers above the keys like she is about to dig into really messy buffalo wings and then uses one finger at a time to press a key. I really don’t know how she writes an essay like that, but she is a better writer than me so who knows. It seems like she is having a good time though.

My cat also moved with me, but she isn’t having as good of a time. Currently she is hiding under my bed regretting picking me as her mom a few years ago. I hope she gets over it and comes to like the new room.

I really think I would like to write with one of these. It takes me some time to process what I want to say when I write and this gives me time to do so. Sometimes when I journal\ my writing shows my current mood so clearly. When I am anxious or upset it is all tense and scratched out. It feels like when I write like that I am not able to calm down but instead I’m just transferring those feelings to the page. It doesn’t force me to take a second to think, but this does.

Side note from AWM staff: We found another paper, mostly crossed out (probably a first draft) that read “My girlfriend is making fun of me, but I love her.” We so hope that it was a response to this, and that you both had a great time!

Good luck Andrew! We just know you’ll do great things!

Once upon a time there was a young boy who attended East Kentwood High School. This year, he was a junior, and after a long year was excited to start his summer. This summer, he had attempted to go ahead and apply for a program in Washington D.C. He is excited for the program this summer and is looking forward to the opportunities it will bring him. Additionally he is looking forward to getting to know more people and working throughout the summer. This is going to be such an exciting summer and he is looking forward to it all. Andrew Love loves his friends and family and thanks them for the impact they have had on his life. Hopefully he will also find love and get a boyfriend so that he can experience love and romance for real. This is going to be such a fun summer and he cannot wait to get it all started!

Thank you for reading this. You have a blessed day and do something positive in this amazing world!

Andrew Moses Love
